THE QUICK ANSWER
Maintaining Pattern Imprinted Concrete can be relatively easy providing you stay on top of it and do not leave it for too long. Pattern Imprinted Concrete requires an occasional jet wash and it needs to be re-sealed every so often. You won’t necessarily have to outsource the re-sealing as long as you follow the correct steps and use the right products you can do it yourself (if you are able). Some prefer to let a professional deal with the maintenance for peace of mind but, at the end of the day, it’s all down to individual preference and circumstances.
How Often Should I Clean It?
Cleaning the surface is an integral part of maintaining pattern imprinted concrete. The answer to, ‘How often?’, depends on a number of factors including; the frequency of use and how close your imprinted concrete patio/driveway it is to overhanging trees and grass areas. Once the driveway has been installed, the contractor will apply a coat of gloss acrylic sealer. This will protect the surface from weathering. Without sealer, the surface will begin to crack/crumble as the colour pigments used within the concrete are not natural. This will also lead to fading when exposed to UV rays.
A year after having imprinted concrete installed, this is usually the time to clean and apply another layer of sealer. Do this for the first 3 years, by which time the sealer will have built up a layer of protection. It is then advised to seal the surface every 2-3 years to stay on top of it and help prevent it from irreversible damage.
Hiring A Professional To ReSeal
If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you can seal the surface yourself. If you choose to take the maintenance into your own hands then please be very careful to not trap any moisture in the sealer as this will react and can ruin the whole installation.

Top tips for maintaining Pattern Imprinted Concrete Driveways
- Clean the surface using a jet wash. Be sure to remove all grime, moss and algae. Treat the surface with a moss killer should it be covered in it.
- Re-silicone the expansion joints to prevent weeds growing through these gaps. Use a weather resistant CLEAR silicone.
- Wait for the surface to completely dry. Sealers react with water and will turn white, which is near impossible to remove once applied.
- Seal the surface using either a brush, spray or roller. Put plenty on but don’t let it puddle. Use a gloss acrylic sealer to rejuvenate the shiny new appearance.
